What is ISO 9001:2015? Why is it important?

ISO (International Organization of Standardization) is an independent, non-governmental international organization with a membership of 162 national standards bodies. Through its members, it brings together experts to share knowledge and develop voluntary, consensus-based, market relevant international Standards that support innovation to global challenges.

In a nutshell, ISO and its members create international standards to make things work. They give specifications for products, services and systems, to ensure quality, safety and efficiency and they are instrumental in facilitating international trade.

What is ISO 9001:2015?

ISO 9001:2015 sets out the criteria for a quality management system and is the only standard in the family that can be certified although the certification is not a requirement. ISO 9001:2015 can be used by any organization, large or small regardless of its field of activity. To put it into perspective, there are over one million companies and organizations in over 170 countries that are ISO 9001:2015 certified.

This specific ISO standard is based on several quality management principles including:

  • A strong customer focus
  • The motivation and implication of top management
  • The process approach to continual improvement

ISO 9001:2015 is customer focused. Using this specific standard ensures that customers get consistent, high quality products and services.

Why is ISO 9001:2015 compliance/certification important to me, the consumer?

ISO 9001:2015 compliance/certification is important to you, the consumer, because it focuses on you and helps the business that you may be working with create a process that ensures you get a high-quality product and/or service. Compliance/certification of this standard also shows that a business is serious about customer service and delivering the best product and/or service to their clients. It is also ensures that a business has the principals and practices in place for continuous improvement which is a pillar of ISO 9001:2015.

Although being ISO 9001:2015 doesn’t necessarily need to be a fundamental requirement for you working with a potential FIBC bulk bag supplier, it is something to consider and can be a differentiator when narrowing your search. ISO 9001:2015 compliance/certification doesn’t guarantee a great customer experience, but it does show a commitment to a customer focused experience and continuous improvement.
